Severe Weather Shelter
During the winter of 2016-17, the Pacific Northwest experienced one of the harshest winters in recent history. Thanks in part to grass roots efforts, Vancouver did not lose lives of those living on the streets. In response, local churches and neighborhoods partnered with Council for the Homeless and CHAP during the winter of 2017-18 to see that we not only avoided the loss of lives but that we protected lives by providing Severe Weather Shelters (SWS). Immanuel Lutheran Church (ILC) Severe Weather Shelter (SWS) served 81 individuals on 5 severe weather nights and on Wednesdays and Thursdays during a 5-week period. Partnering with other congregations such as Beautiful Savior Lutheran, Living Hope, and St. Matthew in Washougal, ILC Severe Weather Shelter (SWS) was able to be part of a system that served 330 guests Monday-Thursday nights for 5 weeks and 1031 guests on 27 severe weather nights. Anticipating similar need this upcoming winter, ILC plans to serve as a Severe Weather Shelter December 2018 – March 2019 and open on Wednesdays and Thursdays January 23rd – March 28th. This will be done in partnership with other congregations organized by the Severe Weather Task Force called by Council for the Homeless. Providing this service to our community members will once again require a community-wide effort, so we are asking for your help and support in the following ways: Volunteer to staff the shelter at Immanuel on regular nights and/or on severe weather nights depending on your location from the shelter. Volunteer to do laundry on weekends and/or after severe weather events. Donate food, supplies, or guest items: Non-perishable, pre-packaged snacks such as Granola Bars, Cheese Sticks, Dried Fruit & Nuts, Fruit cups, Crackers, Hot Cocoa, Coffee, Tea. Supplies such as Toilet Paper, Clorox bleach wipes, Kleenex, Hand sanitizer. Guest Items such as hygiene supplies, toothpaste and toothbrushes, warm hats and gloves and scarves, winter coats, baby wipes and diapers. Please contact Immanuel Lutheran Church at 360-694-3661 or office@immanuelvancouver.org if you would like to sign-up to volunteer or donate items. Thank you for all your support and please pray for our community members living on the streets this winter. Volunteer Trainings will be Sunday, Nov. 18th at 4:30-6pm and Monday, Nov. 26th 5:30pm-7pm.
